Crafting and Creative Lettering

Students will be introduced to the history and use of lettering within arts and crafts. Various Fonts and Texts will be discussed, explored using different papercraft materials and techniques and re-created. Students will also create their own bespoke Letters that can be used within their own cardmaking and scrapbooking.

Course aim

To provide a brief introduction to the use of Typography and Text within Arts and Crafts. This will be explored using different materials and techniques and students will create decorative text that can be used within cardmaking and scrapbooking.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate respect and tolerance by discussing and forming ground rules for the group
  • Identify two historical styles of text that can be re-produced using Glass Painting with Acetate. This can then be added to a card or scrapbook page.
  • Design and create their own decorative lettering using stamping and paper shaping to be used on a card or scrapbook page.
  • To use Quilling with a Monogram template to create a title for a scrapbook page or a topper for a greeting card.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • photographs for scrapbooking

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
