Learn a new skill. Come and learn the basics of the Spanish language and culture: for pleasure, for work, to help your children or for your own health and wellbeing. Understand and use key phrases when meeting people, introducing yourself and others. Learn some useful vocabulary and expressions to say what you like/like doing, to talk about a town/city and the main places of interest, and understand and use key vocabulary and phrases to say what you need/want when going shopping for food (or other). Develop your confidence practising your speaking skills in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

Course aim

To introduce students to the basics of the Spanish language and culture when meeting people,when talking about what they like/like doing and the place where they live/work and when going shopping.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Give and gather personal information when meeting people, (name, nationality, occupation, family, telephone number ).
  • Use a basic vocabulary and phrases to talk about what you like/like doing ( hobbies and pastimes).
  • Understand and give basic information when talking about where they live/work/study.
  • Understand and use basic vocabulary and phrases to talk about a town, what is like and what there is there.
  • Understand and use important vocabulary and expressions to say what you need/ want when shopping for food (or other) and understand quantities and prices.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You need to bring :a notebook and a pen. The tutor will give you information on some books, dictionaries and other resources that can support your learning, and suggest how to use any resources you may already have.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • You can visit BBC languages
