Yoga improves both your strength and flexibility, movement is coordinated with the breath helping to calm the mind. All classes include breathing exercises, stretches , a balanced range of postures and deep relaxation. This course will help to ease stress and reduce physical stiffness and tension, students will feel both relaxed and rejuvenated. The theme of this course is 'Creating Space' particularly in the Upper body enabling you to ease tightness in the Upper back, shoulders and chest and to breathe with ease. Various exercises and poses will be explored, especially back bends and open twists.

Course aim

To alleviate upper body tension through stretches, thoracic breathing, back bending and open twists. Students will create fluidity in their practice through breath focus/ Ujayi breath. Students will explore space in the body in relaxation/meditation.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • practice a range of shoulder and upper body stretches that prepare the body for back bending asanas.
  • practice thoracic breathing and focus on the thoracic breath in back bending postures and open twists.
  • improve practice of The Bridge and/or a modified Wheel pose, improve practice of the Cobra and/or the Sphinx.
  • improve all dynamic practice through breath focus including the use of Ujayi breathing.
  • explore the relationship between breath and a sense of space in the body through the practice of relaxation/ heart chakra meditation.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a yoga mat.
