Yoga improves your physical strength and flexibility, movement is coordinated with the breath helping to calm the mind. Classes include breathing techniques, simple stretches, a balanced range of postures and deep relaxation. This course will enable you to relieve tension and stiffness, to feel both relaxed and rejuvenated. This course will focus on improving upper back and shoulder flexibility through a wide range of practices. Our asana focus will be The Cow Face Pose and variations in Forward Bending. Our relaxation focus will be the practice of Yoga Nidra and chakra visualisation.

Course aim

The focus of this course is to create space in the upper body. Practices will ease neck, upper back and shoulder stiffness, open/ expand the chest to improve breathing. These practices will influence/ improve all other postures/practices.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Practice a wide range of stretches that improve upper body / shoulder flexibility helping to expand the chest and improve breathing.
  • Practice the Cow Face Pose, Quarter Dog, The Sphinx or a modification of these poses.
  • Practice variations of Uttanasana/ Standing Forward Bend improving back strength and flexibility.
  • Practice a range of arm strengthening practices that suit your own individual needs.
  • Improve concentration and relaxation through Yoga Nidra practice

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • Constant feedback and support throughout your practice.

What else do I need to know?

  • You must bring a Non Slip Yoga Mat. A yoga block, blanket and belt would be useful.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
