A course to learn to draw and paint the human figure. It includes drawing with pencil and/or charcoal, and working with colour in pastel, collage and/or paint. Students will be encouraged to explore different ways of looking through drawing as well as gain confidence in using colour through using coloured collage to build pictures as well as paint.

Course aim

To learn to draw and paint the human figure.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Make a drawing of the figure using pencil, charcoal and/or pastel
  • Paint papers to use for collage
  • Construct a collage
  • Demonstrate the use of paint in your work
  • Make a painting or coloured drawing from your collage

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • The course comprises drawing and painting activities to help your progress. In addition you will be expected to bring in all the work you have done on the course on the last day to help you consider your achievements.

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need to bring a studio easel. There are now only two available for beginners. Some A1 size white cartridge paper will be available to use but you will also be expected to bring your own drawing and painting materials.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No experience of life drawing is essential but some experience of observational drawing would be useful.

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
