A friendly and accessible course offering participants the opportunity to gain confidence in knowing their way around their car and provide greater knowledge regarding some common mechanical and electrical issues they may encounter as a 21st century motorist. Discover what all those warning lights actually mean, what's that knocking noise - how serious might it be, is it safe to keep driving, could it all prove expensive? As well as a few regular checks to help keep you and your pasengers on the road safley.

Course aim

This course aims to provide the mortorist with more confidence and knowledge regarding the mechanical workings, warning lights and common faults of the 21st Century motor vehicle.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Gain a knowledge, fresh appreciation & understanding of motor vehicle mechanical and electrical functions.
  • Gain the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to be able to recognise basic vehicle faults.
  • Draw from one’s existing knowledge and experience in recognising these faults.
  • Gain a confidence in reflecting on and expressing views relating to aspects of vehicle repair and maintainance.
  • Develop a motivation & enthusiasm for motor vehicle repair and maintainance.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
