Spanish Art

The Twentieth Century saw an extraordinary blossoming of Spanish art- Picasso, Miro, Gaudi and Dali are obvious examples; this course seeks to trace the origins of this art. In a series of interactive, student based sessions it will seek to explore both its artistic and social origins. Reference will be made to the history of Spain during this period and to those artistic movements- Impressionism, Symbolism, Modernism, Surrealism, Cubism- that arose from this economic,social and political context.

Course aim

This course will study Spanish Art from 1850 to 1950; relating it to its economic, social and political context and attempting to uncover the origins of the extraordinary twentieth century art of people such as Gaudi, Picasso, Dali and Miro.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To understand the outlines of Spanish history 1850-1950
  • To understand the main features of Spanish art during this period
  • To be clear about what criteria can be used to evaluate this art and to use these.
  • To deliver a short presentation about a chosen aspect of this art

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
