Maths and Medical Science

The course will focus around the history of scientific advances in medicine such as the causes of disease and their cures. We will look at basic anatomy, including the heart as well as look at comparing the costs of different medicines and their effectiveness. It is hoped that a visit to a museum will be included within the course to help in the delivery.

Course aim

Use the history of health and diseases to look at applications of numeracy in the safe use of modern medicines as well as appreciate the importance of advances of science in helping to cure disease.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Appreciate the importance of numeracy in the delivery of medicines and monitoring of health. . . .
  • Grasp the importance of different body systems in maintaining good health
  • Be aware of how the media may influence our behaviours in terms of our perceptions of health
  • Understand that scientific ideas in relation to health and disease are changing all the time

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring writing equipment and a file with writing paper.

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
