The spring term at Beverley WEA archaeology study group will feature a study of Archaeological Air Photography, its development, application and recent spy technology-derived methods including Infra-Red and LIDAR survey methods. There will also be a study of the Medieval Military monks. Some controversial literature has been written about the Templars; we will look at the real Knights of the Temple, Hospital, Tutonic and Lazarine orders, their Churches, castles and archaeology.

Course aim

The course will cover the development of Archaeological air photography, its use and application including recent LIDAR applications. Also a module on the Medieval Military Monastic orders (Templars, Hospitallers, Tutonics and Lazarines).

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • All interested people, including those with a passion for the past, photography, gadgets and the History of Military Monasticism.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the processes which cause archaeological crop marks.
  • Show how the observed marks can be used to record cultural activity.
  • Outline the way in which LIDAR functions and is be used.
  • Explain why pacific monks became the shock troops of the Medieval world.
  • Indicate the ways that the military orders were supported overseas from their home countries including the UK.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students may wish to follow their own related research beyond the course.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Informal class discussions will allow specific topics to be covered in depth as the class demands.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring an open and enquiring mind.

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
