Course aim

To further progress the learner in the practice of Tai Chi in a supportive and nurturing manner in order to encourage and stimulate, increase control of body , calmness and help to manage stress in a natural and non-intrusive way.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • It doesn't matter what your level of fitness is. Just come with an open mind and a smile.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • complete warm-up exercises and breathing techniques
  • carry out Tai Chi forms and patterns as per schedule
  • to develop their abdominal breathing techniques
  • to have a sense of calmness and peace through Tai Chi itself and the dedicated relaxation session
  • to follow the safety guidelines as laid down by the tutor

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Feedback given throughout class together with dedicated time at end of each class for reflections Assessment is informal, carried out continually throughout each class and a written record kept for each student on all aspects of class

What else do I need to know?

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and a soft pump style shoe and bring an open mind

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Any handouts needed will be provided by tutor

What can I do next?

  • Use Tai Chi and breathing techniques learnt as a tool to manage any stress or anxiety in your daily life and as a means to become more flexible and mobile
