This course combines basic literacy, computer, co-ordination and social skills, with exercises that are designed to raise awareness of environmental, personal & health issues.

Course aim

To learn new ICT skills and build on existing knowledge To incoporate basic literacy into ICT exercises To provide a supportive & enjoyable atmosphere To promote Social Purpose issues whilst using the computer

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • For students who need a slower pace to learn ICT, basic literacy is embedded into the content of practical exercises. The course is aimed at people who had a learning disability and low literacy levels, this is not an ESOL course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create and reproduce documents combining text, graphics and art work
  • Complete practical exercises to increase awareness of social issues - This terms topic will be Personal Safety
  • Perform print options and organise in a portfolio as evidence of progression and learning
  • Add capital letters, full stops and question marks to text
  • Use formatting tools to construct document layouts and perform editing options with accuracy

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A pen. All other course materials will be provided by your tutor.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Students completing this course will gain confidence working within a group as well as learning new skills using the computer. Basic literacy skills and social purpose issues will be developed while completing practical exercises.
