Painting and Drawing for All

This term we will look a sense of the dramatic, using colour, tone, imagery and shape, Beginning with abstract art in the first weeks we will then spend three weeks each on portrait and landscape painting and how we can make our images more dramatic. We will use a range of techniques and materials including acrylics, oils, inks, charcoal and pastels, on their own or in combination. Throughout the course there will be practical demonstrations showing how to use the various media, as well as one-to-one discussion with the tutor on how your work is progressing. Students will be free to pursue their own projects.

Course aim

Gain confidence in drawing, painting and being expressive in art, exploring a range of materials including pastels, acrylics, inks and oils, in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic drawing techniques, relating the size and shape of one object to another, and composition.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of a range of drawing and painting materials and the confidence to experiment, as a group and individually
  • Apply knowledge in order to create studies and finished pieces
  • Demonstrate the ability to select the essentials of an object to convey a sense of its texture and solidity
  • Have the confidence and ability to adapt imagery to convey a sense of drama or other mood and express individual artistic style and creativity

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Some materials are provided;, however students should bring materials they particularly enjoy working with, eg brushes, paper, canvases, paints etc. Art materials can stain clothing - please wear suitable clothing or an apron.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
