Adaptable Yoga

This course is aimed at people who genuinely want to commence yoga but may be worried about how to begin safely and gently. May have other symptoms and conditions e.g. depression, anxiety, headaches knee/hip/neck pain, high/low blood pressure. Specifically aimed at people who are generally less flexible or have ME, MS, CFS fibromyalgia, joint or mobility problems. It is a gentle course adapted to each learners need led by a experienced and well qualified tutor. Supportive equipment such as wall ropes, yoga chairs and specialist equipment are made available if required. Students learn various techniques to quiet an active mind and restore a good sleep pattern ie., meditation, breathing, postures, relaxation.

Course aim

To lead the students to gently work on improving their coordination, strength and flexibility using their own muscles and body weight with the help of specialist yoga equipment to adapt to their needs.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • It would be advisable to talk to your GP to find out if this sort of activity is suitable to your medical needs.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the meaning of YOGA and the various postures that can be adapted to suit your individual needs and mobility
  • perform simple limbering movements to lubricate joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons to keep them healthy
  • Understand mindfullness and be able to use breath, imagery, sound and bodily sensations to calm the mind.
  • Be able to use specialised equipment and aids to enhance and support varied yoga postures (asanas)
  • Work towards building your confidence and self esteem

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Practice , patience and perseverance is the key to a successful yoga practice. Practice at home the postures learnt to support your learning as it would be helpful in improving and maintaining your health.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Please wear appropriate clothing suitable to a yoga session. Yoga is done with bare feet but you could bring socks and a sweater or jumper to put on during the relaxation.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
