Writing for Children

Through this course students will have the opportunity to experiment with writing for children of different ages and in different genres including fiction, memoir, poetry and script. The course will involve analysis of current writing for children and provide the opportunity to develop the necessary skills (language, voice, narrative structure) to write for this audience in addition to providing opportunities for feedback on ongoing writing projects.

Course aim

This course will cover the key principles of writing for children of different ages and in different genres.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write in a range of styles for a wide range of children.
  • Understand what makes a successful story, book or poem for children and young people.
  • Use pace and plot narratives for children.
  • Use a variety of techniques to effectively engage the interest of children of young people.
  • Understand the responsibility that comes with writing for children.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a notebook and pen.
