The Tempest a study of Shakespeare's play

The tutor will provide students with an annotated version of "The Tempest" with an introduction, which will be used to study the text. The tutor will also show various performances of the play of DVD to enhance our understanding and to provoke discussion of varying interpretations.

Course aim

To undertake a thorough study of Shakespeare's play "The Tempest"

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • discuss the metaphorical/allegorical meanings of the play
  • understand something of the historical and biographical contexts in which the play was written
  • discriminate between the various interpretations seen on DVD

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Students will be expected to do some reading at home. This should amount to no more than two hours a week. On a voluntary basis, students will be invited to undertake research at home and then deliver a brief presentation to the class.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
