Being confident and communicating effectively in a range of situations are important life skills. This course aims to help people understand that there are various techniques that they can use in everyday life and practise developing and using these skills in a fun and very welcoming environment. Each session has a fun and relaxed approach where learners will get to know themselves better: understand how they think about themselves, others and life in general. They will be given opportunities to practise their developing communication skills with free expression in a safe and supported environment that will boost their self-esteem. Learners will also identify the most effective skills to use that suit their personality type and character and understand the importance of good mental wellbeing and positive thinking to help boost their overall confidence and appreciate and celebrate themselves and who they are.

Course aim

To equip learners’ with knowledge and skills to build their self confidence, improve their communication and develop positive mental wellbeing so they can use these skills in a range of situations.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Give 1 or 2 examples of how to build my confidence and begin using them in my everyday life
  • Explain different ways people communicate (verbally / non-verbally) and demonstrate how to use some of these techniques
  • Describe and explain 2 or 3 ways that can improve my mental wellbeing

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
