Sewing for Improvers

This course will include: taking body measurements, transferring written measurements onto fabric using a tape measure. Creating a pattern and stitching the garment. Students will develop skills that will enable them to design new garments

Course aim

To learn and develop on sewing skills;measuring, cutting and using the sewing machine. To build confidence and to become more independent in making their own garments.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to take body measurements accurately and confidently
  • Be able to create a pattern by applying the measurements taken
  • Learn how to use sewing machines, zipper foot, hem foot, button hole and other related sewing equipment, safely and effectively within health and safely guidelines.
  • To become confident and independent learners.
  • To equip students with knowledge and understanding towards the next sewing level

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Fabric, sewing kit consisting of pins, needles, thread, un-picker, tailors chalk, tape measure, pen, note pad.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
