This course is perfect for anyone who is interested in making garments. The course will have some basic goals and learners will be assessed in first few lessons to find out their starting point. Learners will then be asked to discuss and create a list of projects they would like to carry out and select one or more of these to complete. Most of the instructions will be given verbally although sometimes written instructions and drafting handouts will be given too. Learners will be encouraged to make notes and try to follow the written instructions. Practical work will be observed through all the course and feed back will be given straight away. Learners will have opportunity to meet community members and make new friends. Course will be taught in safe and friendly environment.

Course aim

To introduce various methods of taking body measurements, drafting, cutting and stitching. To demonstrate the techniques and processes of making garments beginning with learners' starting points and improving their sewing knowledge and skills.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use sewing machine and accessories confidently.
  • Use mathematical skills in taking measurements and designing garments.
  • Draft and cut fabric to design garments.
  • Use various stitching methods and techniques in production of projects.
  • Complete projects neatly and professionally.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
