From 1789 - 1848 Britain stood alone as a bastion against revolution. Some historians have speculated on just how close Britain came to a revolution during this period, and why one did not take place. This course will examine the period’s key themes, movements and events before developing conclusions about why revolution failed to occur.

Course aim

This day school will provide an informative overview of threats of revolution in Britain from 1789 - 1848, before developing conclusions about why a revolution failed to occur.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Name and describe five key movements from the period
  • Name and describe five key events
  • Compare and contrast events and movements from different decades
  • Explain three robust reasons why Britain did not experience a revolution from 1789 - 1848

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
