Course aim

To develop students’ numeracy skills which they can apply to their everyday life and to work situations involving money.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand decimal currency and how money in £ is written to 2 decimal places. Read and write and decimal money using correct notation in £ or pence. Round to nearest 10p or pound in real life situations such as shopping.
  • Carry out calculations with money with in everyday life situations, for example when shopping or at work, using basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) with and without a calculator.
  • Understand percentages and how to apply them to real life situations such as: discounts on purchases when shopping and interest rates on loans.
  • Understand and create a budget for income and expenditure. Understand a pay slip: gross pay; deductions and net pay. How to calculate net pay after deductions.
  • Think about and discuss money in a changing society and in other countries and currencies: decimalisation; the Euro; the cashless society; foreign currencies and holiday money exchange rates.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Optional additional work will be provided to complete in your own time to support your learning.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
