Sewing for All

Sewing for all will enable learners to develop their skills in sewing and to make garments for themselves and others. The aim is to empower them with a new skill for life and to boost their self esteem and confidence. Learners will gain skills in pattern drafting, taking body measurements, marking, cutting and finally sewing. By the end of the course learners will understand how to use the sewing machine safely, learn different sewing techniques and understand drafting basic sewing pattern. On this course they will be taken from the very basic of setting up and threading a sewing machine to making wearable outfits fit for purpose.

Course aim

The aim of the course is to empower learners with a new skill for life and for them to develop sewing skills and make wearable garments.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the tools needed and required for sewing
  • Take body measurements
  • Mark and prepare fabric ready for cutting and sewing
  • Sew seams using the sewing machine
  • Make a garment with my own body measurements

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Learners will need to bring their own scissors, fabric, thread and pins from session2. Pen/notepad required from session1. Sewing machines, iron+ironing board will be provided. Tutor will provide tape measures, interfacing and tailor's chalk
