A women only course which introduces basic stitching techniques, how to thread a sewing machine and to create patterns for a basic garment. Learners will stitch a garment of their choice using the basic stitching techniques.

Course aim

To develop and enhance the skills required in stitching a garment. To provide an introduction to the fibre to fabric process, fabric properties and their suitability for particular garments.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of health and safety guidelines while using a sewing machine.
  • Identify fabric properties and their suitability for a garment
  • Take body measurements accurately and transfer information in order to create their patterns.
  • Demonstrate how to use a sewing machine, create a pattern, cut fabric and stitch a garment.
  • Have confidence in themselves by working independently and developing the skills required to stitch a garment.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Fabric for your garment, sewing kit consisting of pins, hand sewing needles, thread, unpicker, tailors chalk, tape measure, pen, note pad

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
