The course will cover taking body measurements, transferring measurements onto the fabric, using mathematical skills, creating a pattern and stitching the garment. Students will develop skills that will enable them to consider other learning pathways and opportunities.

Course aim

Inspire students to develop skills in sewing by using techniques and methods to create unique garments. The course will also support students to develop confidence and be independent in making their own garments.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • The course is for women only

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Take body measurements confidently, independently and accurately
  • Create a pattern by applying the measurements taken and to develop understanding how freestyle patterns are created.
  • Stitch and complete the full outfit confidently and independently.
  • Use sewing machines, zipper foot, hem foot, button hole, bias binding foot and other related sewing equipment, safely and effectively within health and safety guidelines.
  • Develop creativity and confidence to make versatile designs

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Sewing kit consisting of sewing needles, thread, un picker, tailors chalk, tape measure, pen , note pad and fabric. Bring your own garment fabric

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
