Volunteer Helping in School

This is an 11 week course designed for those who would like to volunteer in a school. There is also a volunteer placement alongside the course approximately 2 hours per week. Embedded within the course is the NCFE Level 2 recognised qualification for those who would like to use this to gain employment.

Course aim

To help students gain knowledge and understanding of life in school. To support and promote parental engagement with children’s learning. To achieve a recognised qualification: L2 Award in Support Work in Schools.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course
  • Students need a level 2 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Evidence successful attainment of the Unit 1 Learning Outcomes – Child and Young Person Development
  • Evidence successful attainment of the Unit 2 Learning Outcomes – Safeguarding the Welfare of Children and Young People
  • Evidence successful attainment of the Unit 3 Learning Outcomes – Communication and Professional Relationships with Children, Young People and Adults
  • Evidence successful attainment of the Unit 4 Learning Outcomes - Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Work with Children and Young People
  • Evidence successful attainment of the Unit 5 Learning Outcomes - Schools as Organisations

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Students will require writing materials and an A4 folder to present their completed work.

  • It is hoped that the majority of students will wish to progress to the course - "Helping with SEND in Primary School" Students will be encouraged to progress gain L2 qualifications in English and maths, if appropriate.

Enrolment Conditions

You can enrol online if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • are paying with a credit/debit card or are not paying a fee because of a qualifying benefit
  • have a valid email address
  • have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2017
  • have read and accept the standard terms and conditions
