A flexible course to learn how to use a computer or build on computer skills, access the Internet safely, use email safely, gain skills using some of the applications within the Microsoft Office Suite to create and edit documents. There will be opportunity to access the apps on learners own tablet or smart phone.

Course aim

The course is aimed for learners to gain skills using a computer (or their own tablet/smart phone), understand how to access the Internet safely, use email and build on their skills using some of the applications within Microsoft Office.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Learners must be registered members at The Acorn Centre or have authorisation with WEA or the Acorn Centre to be able to attend.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand how to gain access to a computer and input information using the keyboard and mouse.
  • Access the Internet safely and securely and find specific information using logical operators.
  • Understand how to use a web-mail account to create and edit email messages. Also to know how to send, receive and forward messages.
  • Understand how to use Microsoft Word to create documents, use formatting tools, edit and save files securely.
  • Understand the filing/folder system within Windows Explorer to sort/copy/move or delete files and folders.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Learners may like to bring their own note book to record main points.
