Course aim


Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Operate the sewing machine, overlocker and iron safely and explain why and how you have done this.
  • Be confidence when working on personal sewing projects and explain why they have done this.
  • Show tolerance, respect, diversity and equality to all staff and students.
  • Follow tutor instructions to make, reproduce or alter a garment and explain how and what they have done to produced it.
  • Take part in group discussion, Q+A and produce sewing samples when required.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Provide a sewing kit which includes: Pins, Chalk, Thread, Scissors, Un-picker, Hand sewing needles. Fabrics, patterns, and notions for personal projects.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Students can continue with the sewing classes to build confidence and progress with their sewing skills. Confident machinists could find factory or hand finishing work, alternatively students can set up a small home business.
