This course is designed for anyone who wants to learn how to stitch garments. Course will cover a range of topics including: taking measurements, drafting,making patterns cutting fabric and stitching garments. All aspects will be taught step by step depending on learners' ability. Some examples and ideas will be introduced but learners will produce projects of their own choice.All the practical work will be assessed in each session and feed back will be given to individuals. The area of improvement will be identified and mistakes will be corrected. Learners will have the opportunity to meet local community members and make new friends.

Course aim

To introduce the techniques and processes which we will use to create patterns and stitch garments. To develop the understanding of stitching with in the learners' chosen project.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use sewing machine safely and confidently.
  • Follow the instructions to create patterns
  • Draft and cut fabric using measurement
  • Using stitching method and processes.
  • Complete a project using finishing techniques.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Learners will need to bring fabric of their own choice to make garments.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • Learners can take additional course to enhance the sewing skill.
