‘The Art of Japanese Prints: Hiroshige & Hokusai’ – A look at two 19th Century Japanese artists who have become popular in the Western world. Hokusai and Hiroshige took the traditional art of making woodblock prints a stage further with innovative design. Fully illustrated with discussion.

Course aim

This day session will explore the work of Japanese print artists Hokusai & Hiroshige within the context of some earlier Japanese artists.

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the background to the production of the Japanese woodblock prints
  • Contribute to constructive discussion & analysis of the material & examples
  • Make comparisons & contrast between the work of Hokusai & Hiroshige & some earlier Japanese print artists
  • Realise the significance of these artists' work within the Western world
  • Consider a range of examples of Japanese woodblock prints

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
