French Level 1 - Beginners/Returners

Students will learn how to communicate in everyday situations, including introducing themselves, saying where they are from, introducing others, ordering, accepting and refusing drinks, getting directions, and learning numbers. The emphasis will be on developing conversational skills, grammar points being introduced and practised as they come up. Though aimed at beginner level, the course is suitable for returners who would prefer a low level start.

Course aim

To develop the students' ability to converse in and understand simple French as a visitor to France or other French-speaking countries.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Meet and greet people, use various greetings and say goodbye
  • Say where I come from, my nationality and hometown and my occupation
  • Talk about my family and friends - their names, ages, nationalities and occupations
  • Know the names of drinks and how to order them, how to accept or refuse a drink
  • Know and have practised numbers from 0 to 100

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • I offer students the opportunity of having work marked as they go along if they so wish. Completion of homework will help me to assess progress and feed back, either in a class situation or individually where appropriate.

What else do I need to know?

  • Usborne French for Beginners will be used The main course book has yet to be decided, and handouts will be provided until students have had chance to provide their own copies.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
