Sewing in the Community

A women only course which introduces stitching techniques, how to thread a sewing machine and to create patterns for a basic garment. Learners will stitch a garment of their choice using the stitching techniques taught.

Course aim

To develop and enhance the skills required in stitching a garment. To provide and introduction to the fibre to fabric process, fabric properties and their suitability.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of health and safety guidelines while using a sewing machine.
  • Identify fabric properties and their uses.
  • Take body measurements and transfer information in order to create their patterns for their chosen garment.
  • Demonstrate how to use a sewing machine, establish lay plan, cut fabric and stitch a garment.
  • Gain confidence in themselves by working independently and developing the skills required to stitch a garment.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • As the course mainly consists of practical work, feedback will be given on the portfolio of work in order to help students identify areas for improvement or which areas of work requires more practice.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You will need to bring the following: fabric, threads, file (for portfolio), pencil, pens and paper (for taking notes)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
