Life Drawing and Painting

Ref: C3671628

The course will give you the opportunity to practise and improve your drawing and painting of the human form. You will work quickly to try and capture the essential posture of the model, improving your seeing skills and memory over a series of short poses. You will also be encouraged to make more detailed studies of form and features during the longer poses. A variety of materials may be used to help keep your work lively and spontaneous.

Course aim

To make drawings and paintings of the figure from a live model.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Some drawing and/or life drawing experience would be useful. Absolute beginners are welcome but should be prepared to find the course quite challenging.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use fast gestural marks to capture posture.
  • Use traditional drawing strategies such as sighting and using negative shapes to check proportions.
  • Draw the human body as a connected whole rather than an assemblage of limbs and features.
  • Identify and apply light, medium and dark tones to express the form and weight of the model.
  • Use a range of materials and techniques to make pictures of the human body.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be directed to various internet resources to use in your own time as an aid to learning and as a basis for discussion about the subject.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a large folder or carrying tube to transport your work, a cheap sketch-book or scrapbook, a fineliner or biro, a pencil 2B or blacker and an eraser, optional watercolours or soft pastels, a portable easel if you have one.
