This course will include: taking body measurements, transferring measurements onto the fabric using mathematical skills, creating a pattern and stitching the garment. Students will develop skills that will enable them to consider other pathways and opportunities.

Course aim

To develop skills in sewing by using various strategies, techniques and methods and to inspire students to create unique garments. To build confidence and to become more independent in making their own garments.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • The course caters for women only.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to take body measurements confidently, independently, accurately, and adapt body measurement to individual shapes and sizes.
  • Be able to create a pattern by applying the measurements taken and to develop understanding how free style patterns are created.
  • Learn how to use sewing machines, zipper foot, hem foot, button hole and other related sewing equipment, safely and effectively within health and safely guidelines.
  • To become confident and independent learners.
  • Be able to develop creativity to empower students, to make versatile designs which will challenge the students learning.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Fabric, sewing kit consisting of pins, needles, thread, un-picker, tailors chalk, tape measure, pen, note pad.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
