Song Writers and Hollywood 1930s to 1950s

Following on from 2016, we will examine further the work of particular songwriters such as Johnny Mercer, Harry Warren and Sammy Cahn, who were major contributors to Hollywood films, rather than to Broadway shows. Come and enjoy their songs and revive happy memories.

Course aim

To appreciate the major contributions of particular songwriters, whose work was mainly for Hollywood, covering many films over the years.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Impact of ''Talkies'' of the growing demand for music, including songs.
  • The songs, contributions and achievements of the songwriters studied.
  • Importance of personal memories through films and songs. How the importance was enhanced further by radio, records, and T.V.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
