A basic level course at Entry level aimed to build awareness, confidence and independence by developing an individual's writing ability.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to help improve the confidence of individuals by developing their communication through the process of creative writing, which can be applied to the life skills required in an everyday context such as employment.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Actively engage as a member of the group through discussion, and improve confidence when communicating to others.
  • Develop writing ability, using familiar topics, based upon everyday themes.
  • Improve basic writing structure.
  • Practice the spelling of common and everyday words.
  • Have raised awareness and consciousness of community issues.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Optional homework will be provided to reinforce class based learning.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It is desirable that learners bring a file, paper and writing equipment so that they can take ownership of their own work.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • learners should access different sources of media to improve their awareness of local and national issues.
