French Level 3

Ref: C3671544

Students will have a good basic working knowledge of the language and will develop this further through studying themed topic based units. The emphasis will be on speaking, listening and understanding the language together with confidence building in its use. This will be achieved by the use of communicative classroom activities and exercises amongst the students. Grammar points and exercises will be introduced as appropriate to the texts and topics being studied.

Course aim

To develop a good and broad working knowledge of the language with the emphasis on speaking and listening/understanding skills through studying themed topic areas. Relevant grammar points will be introduced as appropriate.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • The course is suitable for previous students. The course is also suitable for students who have a GCSE level standard of the language. Students who are not sure of their level are welcome to talk to a member of staff.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • talk about a healthy life style.
  • know how to contradict what someone says.
  • know why laughter really is the best medicine.
  • understand much more about the term's grammar point: adjectives.
  • have developed further my knowledge of the French numbering system and French weather forecasts.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • The tutor will always be available during or after the class to discuss any relevant language points that individual students may wish to raise.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Essential materials are: 1 - The course book " Breakthrough French 3 " 2 - The course grammar book " La Grammaire en Clair "

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Self study of the course book is always encouraged and in particular the revision of topic areas already covered. Reading French newspapers and magazines is an excellent way of increasing vocabulary and keeping up with French current affairs.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • You could progress to Higher Education courses. Follow link to the PEARL website for information
