Practical instrument playing - choice of instrument available is: piano, keyboard, guitar, and is suitable for beginners upwards, with some ensemble work for those learners who wish to work in groups with those of an appropriate standard. Musicians need to have an instrument for practice at home, and guitarists should bring their own guitar to the sessions.

Course aim

To reach a competent level on a musical instrument (piano, keyboard or guitar) through individual work and some ensemble work as appropriate, in an encouraging and friendly atmosphere. To progress in the Theory of Music.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Know and understand the basics of playing a musical instrument (if beginner)
  • Progress to a higher level of playing a musical instrument
  • Progress through the theory of music

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Keyboards are provided (shared). Guitarists need to bring their own guitar. You are welcome to bring additional music sheets you would like to learn with you.
