Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have an appreciation of the form, function and design of stringed instruments
  • Have improved tool handling and general woodworking skills

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Although it's not compulsory to carry our work outside the class, you will make much faster progress if you can do so.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • We have a good selection of specialised tools, but you are encouraged to bring your own if you have them. Materials are not included in the course fee, but the tutor can advise on obtaining them.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • "The Art of Violin Making" by Courtnall and Johnson is an excellent book which is strongly recommended. There are also some valuable internet resources, but the tutor should be consulted about their relative merits.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
