The Shock of the New: the Birth of Modern Art

From the post-impressionism of Cezanne, Gaugin and Van Gogh, to the fauvism of Matisse and the Cubism of Picasso, we will look at the birth of modern art in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Course aim

To introduce students to post-impressionist, fauvist and cubist painters.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify key works by a series of post-impressionist painters
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the chief characteristics of the movements covered
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the social and cultural background to the movements studied

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
