This course is designed to be fun and relaxed while we discover what kind of writing we might want to pursue. Perhaps you’d like to embark on a novel, write short stories, record your life or add a little spark to your diary or letters. Whatever your ultimate aim this short course will help you get started. We will explore why we might be scared of the blank page and then we’ll get going, looking at ways to generate and develop our ideas.

Course aim

To provide a supportive and encouraging space for people to begin putting their ideas down on paper.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate how to overcome personal barriers to putting pen to paper.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of ways of generating ideas for my writing.
  • Identify key elements in good writing.
  • Describe how confidence has been gained confidence to start and develop the writing project of my choice.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • We will use a range of writing exercises to develop our confidence and skills. We will also be encouraged to take part in class discussions so that we can learn about the process of writing from each other.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Everyone will be encouraged to share their experiences of the writing journey as much as they are comfortable with as we can learn a lot from one another.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • Just bring some paper and a biro. If you prefer to type feel free to bring your laptop.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits

  • have a valid email address
  • have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
