Painting and Drawing

Ref: C3671470

The course will allow students to gain confidence in drawing and sketching, developing and improving individual styles. Drawing is not only a basis for most visual art, it is an art form in its own right. Dating back to cave paintings, the ancient Egyptians, classical Greece and Rome and on into the Italian Renaissance. From here originates the modern drawing movements of Europe and the U.S. In the East, the Japanese artist 'Hokusai' interpreted the world using 'line' and his work is still highly regarded. We will start by drawing what we can see, learning how to use light, tone and shade. Students will be using pencil, charcoal, pen, ink and wash, coloured pencils, water-soluble pencils, pastel pencils and soft and oil pastels, as well as discovering new drawing media. A mix of subject matter will be provided as well as information sheets, with examples of techniques. Students can use their own source material and alternative drawing styles will be welcomed.
