For everyone who has Basic literacy skills journaling your life story will cover practical aspects of how to start writing. Explore techniques to generate and capture memories. Practice writing in a supportive safe environment. Receive feedback from tutors and peers. Learn how to offer constructive criticism and form opinions on styles of writing. Discuss aspects of your memories and use expressive writing. The learner will be made aware of some of the practical, emotional and challenging issues to consider before undertaking writing.

Course aim

This course is for anyone who has a desire to capture their life in written form. Memories will be generated using a variety of methods that will then form the basis of written pieces.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • The ability to read and write and recall events

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the general requirements needed to begin writing.
  • Identify personal issues that may re-emerge and explore ways of dealing with them.
  • Develop a structured plan as a guide of how to write your life story. Consider and use a variety of techniques to re visit and capture memories
  • Collect additional information to situate the memories. Research specific facts that affect your story.
  • Offer feedback and share ideas and opinions with the group.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
