Thinking for Yourself - Philosophy

The modular sessions will be in the form of seminars, exploring historical and current philosophical issues through example, reference and a lot of discussion. This is a very interactive course.

Course aim

To introduce, and expand upon, some of the terminology and methodology utilised in the pursuit of philosophical investigation. To introduce various aspects of the world of philosophy

Who is the course for?

What topics will this course cover

- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning - You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning - The main approach is as a seminar with much group discussion. Private, out of class exploration is encouraged

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

How will I know I'm making progress?

- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor - You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning - You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions - A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

- All that is needed is an open, enquiring mind - although a notebook might be useful

Reading and information sources

- No pre reading or pre course work is required

What could the course lead to?

- Progress to another WEA course - Progress to a course with another provider - A life-long quest for a deeper understanding of the wonderful world around us.
