Castaway Music: Music to Film

As well as developing individual's skills on their chosen instrument(s) and playing together as part of a musical ensemble, the main focus of this term will be to compose a piece of music to be developed into a film by another Castaway group or film maker.

Course aim

To introduce learners to writing music for film and apply techniques and ideas learnt to their own group compositions that will be made into film(s).

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of basic music terminology (i.e Dynamics, tempo, pitch).
  • Compose a part for another instrument beside their own.
  • Contribute ideas to a group composition.
  • Take a role in the recording process of a piece of music.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Learners are encouraged to bring their own instruments to the lessons, however, Castaway have a wide range of musical instruments and other resources they can provide learners with.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
