Hang or Hide? The Tudors, Social Change & Catholic Subjects in Northern England

Ref: C3671358

Most people know something about the Tudors as monarchs from school history, but what about their subjects? Huge social changes took places in their reigns and in particular after the Reformation. How did this affect those living under them? Whose cause was advanced and who suffered? What was it like to live in Tudor England? We will look at all these issues with particular emphasis on the Crown's subjects in the north of England and especially their Catholic subjects who were amongst the losers in respect of social change and found themselves in many instances having to either hang or hide. We will make use of original sources, especially wills and there will be plenty of recommendations for further reading.
