Acapella Singing for Women: Harmony and Health

This course aims to help you enjoy singing with others and to feel the health benefits of singing. You do not have to be a music reader or be able to sing solo.A range of songs will be taught by ear - rounds , polyphony and harmony songs from around the world. You'll learn about different cultures and song traditions and there will be an opportunity to sing together in a different environment each term - so far we have sung in a hospital ward, a shopping centre and a 6th century church crypt...Come along and learn about singing mindfully, how to use your whole body to sing and how to sing in parts. Its fun, its healthy and its addictive.

Course aim

Singing is great for physical and mental health. Come along and sing in harmony with other women, and feel the benefits!

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women's voices only, in order to create a safe environment where women can improve their physical and mental health

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Know and practise at least 3 warm up exercises for body, breath and voice
  • be able to sing simple rounds and harmony songs
  • Have explored polyphonic singing, overtoning and improvisation
  • dentify and note any health benefits I have experienced

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Each term we offer an opportunity to sing as a choir outside the class - not necessarily performing, but singing in a different space. This is optional and can be a very enjoyable exercise, building confidence.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • the tutor will occasionally record the group and play this back to the class for them to evaluate their group progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • Wear loose comfortable clothes. Please bring only water to the classroom.Please do not come to class if you have a cold or other infection. Please also refrain from wearing perfume.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Students might like to read about the Natural Voice Network online, or look at videos of acapella singing on You tube.
