Yoga improves your strength and flexibility. Movement is coordinated with the breath helping to calm the mind. Classes always end with a Deep Relaxation. This course will focus on Twisting Asanas, experiencing Inner Calm through linking breath,movement and sound and linking Yoga Philosophy with our practice.

Course aim

This course will focus on Twisting Asanas (reclining, standing, seated), exploring simple techniques of linking breath, movement and sound to experience 'Inner Calm', linking yoga philosophy with our practice ( Upanishads).

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To practice a range of Reclining Twists, understanding the benefits of these practices.
  • To practice simple standing twist exercises, understanding the principles of movement and practice a static Standing Twist asana.
  • Practice a classic Seated Twist or a modification of this pose, understanding the principles of movement.
  • Experience 'Inner Calm' through the use of various techniques linking breath, movement and sound.
  • Consider and reflect on extracts from the Upanishads and other Yogic texts, linking yoga philosophy with your own practice.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Observing your practice is key to measuring your progress. You will receive constant feedback, advice and support to enable you to progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring your own Yoga mat.

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
