Yoga and Somatics

Alert! This yoga course will contain some relaxing postures which are undertaken whilst lying down comfortably! Care and attention will be given to each person and together we will look at ourselves and each others' standing and walking - assessing injuries and general wear and tear which may be making our daily lives just that little bit harder than they ought to be. Part of the lesson of Yoga is to be able to accept ourselves as we are, but that doesn't mean we can't improve on that with Slow Yoga's range of gradual exercises to re-calibrate our brain and muscles, strengthen our legs, shoulders, core, arms and feet. Challenge the myth of ageing by coming to a class every week and finding out what yoga really can do for you.

Course aim

This class will challenge all your preconceptions about what happens to our bodies as we get older.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify problems with my posture and know at least one exercise which if performed regularly, will help me to reduce some of the pain I experience.
  • Focus on my breath and know that by lengthening my out-breath in a specific exercise, I am going to increase my lung capacity and ease tension in my body.
  • Demonstrate that I have improved since the start of the course in at least one posture which uses a balance.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Bring a yoga mat if you have one and a favourite blanket to wrap yourself up in at the relaxation stage of the class. Please bring a pen.
