Medieval Warfare This course will examine medieval warfare and focus on specific themes including battles, castles, knights, military orders, commanders and campaigns from the 6th to the 15th century focusing on Western Europe. It will also explore the reality of war, the political background to war and the codes of chivalry depicted in art and literature. The sessions will look at a range of primary sources, including archaeology, architecture, chronicles and illuminated manuscripts. There will also be workshop sessions where students can look at specific themes in greater depth and discuss a range of specific aspects with other students.

Course aim

The course intends to introduce students to the reality of war in the medieval era rather than the popular myths that have existed for centuries.

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have a clearer understanding of the history of warfare in the medieval period
  • Be aware of the range of military tactics used in medieval warfare
  • Have an understanding how medieval warfare has been represented in later history

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
