A Selection of Famous Poems through the Ages

Ref: C3671292

We will look at a selection of poems written in English through the centuries, many of them well-known and part of our culture. No previous poetry reading experience is required. Suitable for everyone.

Course aim

We will read and study a selection of famous poetry from previous ages, and right up to the present day. This will give the students an overview of some classic poetry written in English.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have an overview of the great sweep of some of the best of English poetry from the last few hundred years and see how cultures and fashions have changed over the years.
  • Be able to appreciate and understand some of the literary devices used in great poetry
  • Be able to read poems aloud and/or discuss responses to the poems with other people in discussions.
  • Be able to relate issues from our own lives or from our culture in the ideas or concepts expressed in the poems.
  • Develop independent research skills so that the students can explore aspects of literary study on their own, bring and share these ideas with the class, and possibly provide input into which poems are studied.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • The course is based around Laura Barber (edit) Penguin Poems for Life and there will be copies available for loan. Some people like to look at the book beforehand- Grimsby library has copies.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • See above- you may benefit from looking at the anthology before the course.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
