A comparison of the archaeological material from Sicily and Sardinia, the Western Mediterranean's two largest islands. Topics will include:- 1) Prehistory; Neolithic; monuments and trade; Bronze Age; island cultural diversity; settlements and burials. 2) Phoenician and Greek trade and settlement - competition. 3) Roman domination and the Byzantine legacy. 4) Arab conquest and settlement. 5) Norman and Spanish conquest, culture, society and the Church, including monasticism.

Course aim

The aim of the course is to study and compare the archaeology of the islands of Sicily and Sardinia.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1) Outline the prehistoric development of the Western Mediterranean basin.
  • 2) Describe the distinctive Bronze Age monuments and cultures.
  • 3) List the outside influences imposed during the Classical period.
  • 4) Show how the Islamic settlement contributed to the flourishing and distinctive later Norman culture.
  • 5) Explain the feudal Mediaeval development of each island.

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
